1099: During the First Crusade, the Crusaders defeated theSaracens at the Battle of Ascalon. Thisled to the creation of the Kingdom of Jerusalem under Godfrey of Bouillon. The Crusader victory led to a period ofpersecution of the small Jewish population living in Palestine. The Crusaders attempted to ban the Jews fromliving in Jerusalem. Apparently it didnot occur to them that such a ban would have meant that Jesus could not live inthe Christian kingdom.

In 1839 he was elected minister of the Spanish and Portuguesecongregation Shearith Israel, New York city, in succession to Isaac Seixas, andserved the congregation thirty-eight years, successfully combating everymovement to change the form of worship in his congregation.
