When is Amtrak the least busy?
Author: USNChief

I plan a long trip on Amtrak and I can go anytime of the year. I would like to travel when the trains are the least crowed. What are the dates when Amtrak carries the least passengers? Thanks

Short answer: Now

Longer answer: it depends on the route. Most long distance trains map to the national travel trends, so the time between Thanksgiving and Christmas is about the slowest of the year. Second week of January through March is also slow. The Florida trains are an exception given the seasonal market they serve. And of course regional events such as Mardi Gras boost ridership. Shorter distance trains are more subject to day of week variances based on the demographic they serve. Acela for example is very business travel oriented, so is busier (and more expensive) on weekdays.

After New Years, it's almost as if you have to pay someone to ride the LD trains.
It's that slow!

Ridership does fall off after the holidays, but Amtrak reduces consists too match.
Fewer passengers- yes.
More empty seats/ rooms- no.

Off season is a great opportunity to deep clean cars, tighten up things, etc.

Amtrak often lists deep discounts on Acela on the Friday and Saturday after Thanksgiving.

Late September through around Thanksgiving, then mid January to about Easter. I've seen many LD trains with well under a bus load in the coaches.

Some routes, like 19/20 south of Atlanta, can have downright depressing numbers year round. The Cardinal between Huntington and Indianapolis can also be extremely dead.

In Winter avoid trips thru snow country unless you're in no hurry to get anywhere and you bring adequate provisions and survival gear.

33 years working for Amtrak on one of the long distance routes and I never noticed what you claim. But then you know better.
