Time travel is a unique concept that mixes past, present, and sometimes the future, in order to bring a special twist to a drama's storyline and plot. These K-Dramas explore unique scenarios like "what if" possibilities or putting a modern day citizen in the old, dusty roads of Joseon. With such fantastical elements in play, viewers can't help but become immersed in these types of dramas.
There are many K-Dramas out there that have used time travel to pique viewers interest and push the story to greater heights. Now, let's take a look at some of these thrilling time travel dramas that you should add to your watchlist!
1. "Tomorrow With You"
tvN
"Tomorrow With You" tells the story of time traveler Yoo SoJoon (Lee JeHoon) and his wife Song MaRin (Shin MinA). After witnessing the death of his future self, SoJoon decides to marry MaRin in order to change his fate. Lee JeHoon and Shin MinA's chemistry is immaculate throughout the drama, bringing out feelings of warmth, longing, and hope for their future together. This drama will tug on your heartstrings and will require you to keep a box of tissues close.
2. "Tunnel"
OCN
If time travel wasn't thrilling enough, add in a cop, a serial murder case, and a cast of superb actors, then you'll get OCN's "Tunnel". Starring Choi JiHyuk, Yoon HyunMin, and Lee YouYoung, "Tunnel" follows a detective from 1986 who, after chasing a serial killer through a tunnel, finds himself in the year 2017. There, he works with a team in order to catch the killer. This drama brings you on a heart-pounding rollercoaster as the detectives pour their blood, sweat, and tears into the investigation. "Tunnel" will have you playing detective along with the main leads in their tireless pursuit of the story's villain.
3. "Familiar Wife"
tvN
It's not everyday that you receive a second chance and get to redo things in life. But that's exactly what happens to Cha JooHyuk (Ji Sung) as he's given the opportunity to travel back in time and escape from his marriage with Seo WooJin (Han JiMin). Instead, he finds himself married to his first love from college, Lee HyeWon (Kang HanNa). "Familiar Wife" explores the difficulties of life after marriage and how certain situations can make you regretful and unhappy. But it also shows how our decisions make us who we are and mold us into the person we are today. This heartwarming drama definitely deserves to be on your watchlist.
4. "Mr. Queen"
tvN
"Mr. Queen" is the perfect mix of side-splitting humor, Joseon politics, and touching romance that it's no wonder how this series received record-breaking ratings during its initial run. Shin HaeSun shines in her role as she depicts a wild, modern-day man trapped in the Queen's body. Together with her King, played by Kim JungHyun, the two portray an interestingly chaotic chemistry that will keep you smiling until the end.
5. "Signal"
tvN
tvN's hit drama "Signal" stars Lee JeHoon, Kim HyeSoo, and Cho JinWoong. One day in the present, criminal profiler Park HaeYoung (Lee JeHoon) finds a walkie-talkie and hears Detective Lee JaeHan (Cho JinWoong) speaking on the other end—all the way from the year 2000. They continue to communicate and together, along with Cha SooHyun (Kim HyeSoo), they solve cold cases. The use of true events makes this drama even more thrilling, adding to the captivating mystery of its story. It will keep you at the edge of your seat as the detectives passionately work to reach the end of various cold cases.
6. "Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo"
SBS
"Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo" follows a modern day woman, HaeSoo (IU), as she travels back in time to the Goryeo period. There, she meets and falls in love with fourth prince Wang So (Lee JoonGi), a man feared by many. The drama showcases the complexity of the royal family and the endless plots to take over the throne. In between the acts of betrayal and palace politics, viewers are treated to moments of sweetness as HaeSoo brings out Wang So's hidden acts of affection. "Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo" is definitely a journey, but the end is totally worth it.
7. "The King: Eternal Monarch"
SBS
"The King: Eternal Monarch" uses the concept of parallel worlds and time travel as central forces to its plot. It tells the story of Emperor of Corea, Lee Gon (Lee MinHo) and Seoul detective, Jung TaeEul (Kim GoEun). Together, they search for the truth behind King Lee Ho's murder and Lee Gon's mysterious savior. Among the many mysteries within the plot, this drama exudes a soft tenderness that fills up your heart with a special warmth. In addition to this is the compelling plot and electrifying chemistry between Lee MinHo and Kim GoEun. All these reasons and more make it a drama you do not want to miss!
